Cortisone injections – Update.

In December you’ll of seen I posted about my experience with hip dyslasia and how after years of hospital appointments and pain, I’d just recently had my first course of Cortisone injections on 18th November 2015. After the procedure I had quite a bit of pain/discomfort which the hospital had warned me about but within about a week the constant pain I’d grown so used to had completely gone. I honestly can’t put into words how good that felt, you’re body gets so used to feeling pain that you completely forget what it’s like to wake up pain free.

Three weeks seemed to fly by and I genuinely felt like I’d be given a brand new leg, I thought I’d finally found something that truly worked and as time passed I was overjoyed to finally be able to get back into a regular routine at the gym, I could see friends again I know it probably sounds crazy that it’d stopped me seeing friends but being in daily pain really had started to take it’s toll on every aspect of my life.

So everything was going great until about a week before Christmas when I first began to notice the clicking again when moving my hip, I didn’t think much of it and just assumed it was because of the increase in cold weather but with the more time that passed I noticed the niggling pain start to come back when walking. I was absolutely gutted at the thought of being back in pain as the last few weeks had been so nice and I finally felt like I had some control over my daily activities again.

We’re almost at the end of January and sadly my pain with my left hip has well and truly reared it’s ugly head again, it’s horrible to back to square one again after a lovely few pain free weeks but thankfully I will be seeing my specialist again in February and I’ve got everything crossed that he’ll be able to offer me something that’s more long lasting.

Have any of you guys ever tried Cortisone and did they work for you? If not how did you deal with the pain?

How exercise has improved my cp 💪

In previous posts I’ve discussed my weight loss over the last two years which has made me so incredibly happy but it’s also improved my Cerebral Palsy in ways I could’ve never imagined!

Before starting the gym my mobility had hit an all time low, I was constantly falling over, had daily aches and pains and things I’d once found easy had become a huge struggle.  As you can imagine being 4 ft 11 and almost 12 stone is going to affect anybody’s mobility so add CP into the mix and your not doing well!

I was a complete beginner when it came to the gym and I had no idea where to start when it came to exercises, I thought I would be able to get some help online but after hours of searching I found that nearly all the exercises or advice I could find for people with disabilities were poor to say the least.

My first few months at the gym I took things easy and only used machines that I knew wouldn’t effect my legs as I was scared of injuring myself and loosing what independence I had, after about 6 months into my gym session I started to notice my weight loss but couldn’t see much difference to my mobility problems. Once I got more comfortable at the gym I began to figure out what I could use and that’s when my complete love for the gym truly started.

I started to see a real difference to my Cerebral Palsy when I’d been at the gym about a year and a half, I had so much strength in my legs and for the first time in my life I felt strong enough to walk without linking someone while out and about which at the age of 24 is amazing (no one wants to be holding a parents hand at my age). As well as my body strength and stability improving I also found that the more I worked out the more my stamina improved which meant that I could finally complete a lifelong goal, which you will know from my previous was completing race for life 😀

I know that it is a cliche but exercising definitely has changed my life and improved my health and wellbeing in so many ways, before I started working out I was convinced that exercise wouldn’t do me much good but I was so wrong and would recommend exercising to anyone regardless of their disability. I know that not everyone can access every piece of equipment but no matter what you can do, any form of movement will really help.

see the ABILITY in disability!

So many people seem to hear the word disability or see someone with a disability and the first thing that comes to thier mind is a huge list of what that person cant do, why is that? Why can’t we focus on the ability in disability!

As some of you will know from my previous posts, one of my life’s goals is to change the worlds perceptions of disabily and also let everyone know that instead of focusing on the negatives that may come with having a disability there are also a lot of amazing positives! I know some people might not agree with me but despite everything I would never change my disability because it is a huge part of what makes me who I am!

Ive met some amazingly inspiring people during my 24 years whose main aim has been to grab life and make it the best it could possibly be, regardless of what life throws at them or what barriers they face. They have achieved some great things university degrees, incredible jobs, marathons and the list goes on, so why is it that some narrow minded people in our society still feel the need to focus on our barriers?

I’ve achieved a lot of great things throughout my life but my greatest achievememt so far is taking part in Cancer Research Race for life 2014,  it was a 5k race which is about 3 miles and many people were convinced that since I had no one to take part in the race with me, it was something I would not be able to complete. I am an act on impulse type of person though and because Cancer has effected a lot of my family members or loved ones, I was determined to complete the race no matter how long it took me.

So despite my doubts and other peoples worries, I took the plunge and signed up for the race about 5 weeks before the event. I spent all my time leading up to the race walking as much as possible and trying to raise as money as I could for such a special cause.

So Race day arrived and with my very own gang of cheerleaders, I headed to Aintree race course, my first thought when arriving were wow I’m going to get lost in all these people and my second thought was one of shear fear of how big the course looked. I had brought my wheelchair in case I needed to sit down and also for support but I was determined to try my hardest to complete the race without sitting down.

The atmosphere was the best I’ve experienced, so many happy, smiling women and children all together fighting  for such an amazing cause. So many strangers came up to me while walking around the course to see if I needed a hand, which was lovely! So 1 hour and 12 minutes later the finish line was in sight and believe me when I tell you I’ve never felt more excited and emtional at the thought of sitting down!

imageAnyone who knows me personally would tell you I’m very emotional at the best of times and this day was no exception, the amount of strangers cheering me on and telling me how well I was doing on my way to the finish line was incredible!

Standing at that finish line was without doubt the proudest moment of my life and I wouldn’t change a second of it because on that day, I not only raised money for such an amazing charity but I also proved to myself and many others that my abilities are far greater than my disability!

So hopefully one day the world will see the amazing abilities that are part of us instead of our disabilities first! What are your proudest moments?

Acessible gym equipment or lack of it!

Going the gym over the last two years has become a huge part of my life and something that I don’t ever see changing, it has changed me as a person not only have I lost a lot of weight but it’s changed my mental well being. Its defiantly helped me accept myself and become a more confident person.

My first day at the gym was so daunting, for me having Cerebral Palsy has meant that I’ve tried my best to never do any type of physical activity  in front of other people, just because I haven’t wanted to make a fool of myself but obviously being at a gym there’s no way of getting it out of it.

Having one piece of accessible equipment doesn’t make your building accessible!

My worries about not wanting to look stupid were not eased by the fact that my gymgym like many other buildings does not have much in place in terms of accesible equipment. They only have three maybe four pieces of accessible equipment which include three hand rowers, a rower with space for a wheelchair and a step positioned by one treadmill. Having these pieces of equipment is obviously a great start but it shouldn’t stop there! I’ve been told that I could go to a gym especially designed for disabled users but I don’t see why I should have to,  if they just changed a few things most  of equipment could become accessible to all.

Every little helps..

I know that recently a lot of funding has been cut back and money is tight but I’m not expecting them to re design thier whole gym on my say so, I’ve met so many other people who struggle with the lack of equipment for one reason or another, weather its because of old age or a disability. We all agree that if they just changed a few minor things we could use the gym more freely and safely.

So if by chance anybody reading this designs gym equipment here’s are just a few minor things that could do with changing.

  1. Put a catch on the rowing seat so it doesn’t move when your trying to get on.
  2. A light on the rowers screen so its easier to see.
  3. A step by all treadmills so they’re easier to step on to.

To me it would be so simple for the owners of the gym to at least take these three simple steps to help make life easier for members of the gym,  not only would it help members but it would also help the gym because I strongly believe  that if it was accessible then more people would sign up and recommend the gym others.

Wherever possible I believe that every organisation or building should be made accessible so that everybody no matter thier abilities can freely enjoy thier life!
